THE ARNE PROJECT

Lovers found . . lovers scorned . . .potential lovers encouraged . . . such are the concerns of the solo cantatas by Thomas Arne. The range of human emotions in these works is large and remains as relevant today as when Arne composed them. From fiery outbursts to melting love songs, his settings wrap these very human concerns in music that is as moving as it is elegant.

The Queens Consort will present "The Arne Project," performing North American and New York City premieres of rare cantatas by Thomas Arne in three shows in Manhattan and Queens. With special guest lecturer and Arne Scholar, Dr. Paul Rice from Memorial University, Newfoundland, and special guest soprano, Brittany Palmer.

Join us this April at our shows either in Manhattan or Queens!

IF MUSIC AND SWEET POETRY AGREE

If music and sweet poetry agree,

As they must needs, the sister and the brother,

Then must the love be great ’twixt thee and me,

Because thou lov’st the one and I the other.

Dowland to thee is dear, whose heavenly touch

Upon the lute doth ravish human sense;

Spenser to me, whose deep conceit is such,

As passing all conceit, needs no defence.

Thou lov’st to hear the sweet melodious sound

That Phœbus’ lute, the queen of music, makes;

And I in deep delight am chiefly drowned

Whenas himself to singing he betakes:

One god is god of both, as poets feign,

One knight loves both, and both in thee remain.
